Slowing down rising health care costs is among the top challenges facing corporate America today. Unmanaged, preventable costs related to health care are rising at more than 10 percent annually. More than 75 percent of an employer’s health care costs and productivity losses are related to employee lifestyle-related conditions such as heart disease, obesity, diabetes and some forms of cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These conditions can often be managed or controlled altogether with healthy life style choices—getting more physical activity, eating a healthy diet, managing weight and avoiding tobacco.

Through health care reform, small businesses may be eligible for federal grants to establish a wellness program. Health care reform legislation contains $200 million in federal grant money that will be awarded to small businesses over five years, beginning this year. Eligible businesses must have fewer than 100 employees who work 25 hours or more a week and not have a comprehensive wellness program in place prior to health reform’s enactment in March 2010.

The York County Builders Association Insurance Trust is working with South Central Preferred to provide our customers with some wellness program options for your consideration.

Health reform changes to our plan effective in 2011 are…Lifetime benefit limit increased from $2,000,000 to unlimited…coverage for preventive care was subject to co-pay, now paid at 100%… increased dependent age limit from 19 to 26…coverage for emergency services (covered as in-network benefit, even if done out-of-network)…small employer tax credits for employer with less than 25 employees.

The YCBA Association and the YCBA Insurance Trust have already hosted two Health Care Reform seminars. Watch this publication for future dates!
